Abstract

Technology has allowed us to start new companies, new communities, and new currencies. But can we use it to create new cities, or even new countries?

In part one of this manuscript we introduce the concept of the network state: a city-state in the cloud, a country you can start from your computer, a body based on math rather than science, a group organized by geodesic rather than geographic distance, a community that prizes exit above voice, a state that recruits like a startup, a nation built from the internet rather than disrupted by it.

In part two we provide a roadmap for how to build the first network state, an open source project we call 1729, which starts with a virtual university, bootstraps a digital economy, and can be forked to create new opt-in polities.

New chapters will be released online twice-per-week according to the schedule below, followed by meetings in VR to coordinate development. That is: our goal is not merely to describe what a network state looks like but to actually build the first one, an open source project we're calling 1729. If you are interested in joining us, please apply to become a 1729 contributor here.

Audience

Our text is aimed at an international audience of people who are technically and scientifically literate. We try not to overcomplicate things, but we won't dumb them down either. If you like @balajis' work, and if you are interested in mathematics, cryptocurrencies, seasteading, transhumanism, space travel, life extension, and initially-crazy-seeming-but-technologically-feasible ideas, you should enjoy this.

Just a few years ago it was considered impossible to start a new global currency. Now anyone can do it from a laptop. We are looking for the kinds of people who are interested in extending the ideas behind cryptocurrencies to cryptocountries.
